2002 Climb to Kaiser: Full results and report. by jiml
...The climbers were not pleased with the profile of this stage. It was clear
with the size and length of descent into Clovis, the peloton would regroup
and a sprint finish was inevitable. NOT! That was the view of this rider and
others, but it was not to be the case. Weather, although purported to be a
key factor did not seem to contribute to the results of the leaders. Perhaps
the start time or the ride time played a part in this...

...The stage was set for another test of the strong men and women. The season
had seemingly progressed well for all. Late news that Darlene would not ride
this years event sent a tidal wave of rumor and suspicion through the
peloton. It is still not confirmed that Darlene Schuab was one of the women
in Jan Ulrich's Porsche 911 the night of the incident with the bike rack...

Via Con Carne! The Early Season Remembered by Big C
...I always felt in cycling that January was the most trying time for my ego.
The work spent in the gym coupled with the necessity for putting in "base
mileage" gave the appearance I wasn't riding well. I often found
myself holding back the reigns on group rides with the "Kings of January, " typically,
inexperienced cat 3 and cat 4 riders that had been training their eyeballs out all winter. The "Kings" felt the incessant need to
always try and drop me on every incline and/or occasion....
